Russ DeVore - 2018 Silver Antelope Award Recipient

There are three Silver-level awards for Scout volunteers: the Silver Beaver for council-level service, the Silver Antelope for regional service and the Silver Buffalo for national service.

The Silver Beaver is presented by councils, usually at an annual banquet. The Silver Antelope and Silver Buffalo awards are presented at the BSA’s annual meeting, which was held this year in May in Dallas, Texas.

Our current Council Commissioner, Russell B. DeVore, Ph.D was one of only 32 Scouters from the country (8 from each of the 4 Regions) to receive the Silver Antelope Award in 2018. He has joined a an impressive club of Scouters who have received this award, which was created in 1942.  As symbols of this award, he received an orange-and-white knot to wear on his uniform, an orange-and-white ribbon medal, a lapel pin and, naturally, a certificate.

Russ is the author of two math textbooks, and he's an instrument-rated pilot, so he knows his numbers. And when it comes to Scouting, it's the 52 Scouts who attained Eagle rank in his 18 years as a Scoutmaster that he says make him proudest.

An Eagle Scout, Russ has received the Silver Beaver Award, the Commissioner Award of Excellence in Unit Service, the NESA Outstanding Eagle Scout Award, and the Scoutmaster Award of Merit. He is a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow. He has twice, in 1988 and 2001, been among Scoutmasters invited to attend the National Annual Meeting, and he was the council's Eagle Class honoree in 2002.

Russ has been a regional authorization writer for the National Camp Accreditation Program since 2013 and an area committee member since 2009, and is in his second term as a council commissioner and as a unit commissioner. He has served on four national jamboree staffs, most recently in 2017, has been an area assistant commissioner and vice president of Learning for Life, and spent 14 years as council training chair. Russ has served as a Wood Badge course director and adviser, as Exploring chair and membership chair, and on the Cub Scout roundtable staff. He also served as a Cubmaster and a Webelos den leader.

Russ, now retired, is a former chair of the Arts and Sciences Division at Trident Technical College and a former physics teacher at Bloomsburg University. He has worked in the nuclear and education fields for many years. He volunteers as a judge with the  Junior Academy of Science and serves on a local airport advisory board as well as his church's council.

He and his wife, Fran, are of the Methodist faith and live in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania. They have an Eagle Scout son, Brett, and a daughter, Suzanne, and four grandchildren, Hayden, Parker, Carson, and  Mokena.

Please join in extending our Council's congratulations to Russ!
