Barry Lewis, Esq. - 2018 Silver Beaver Award Recipient

The Silver Beaver Award, which was introduced in 1931, is a national award that can be given to volunteer Scouters at the Council level.  It is the highest award that councils can present to a volunteer.

The award is presented  annually to registered volunteer Cub Scouters, Scouters, Varsity Scouters, and Venturing leaders within the territory under the jurisdiction of a local council. The award recognizes Scouters of exceptional character who have provided distinguished service  and have made an impact on the lives of youth through service given to the council.

At the recent Volunteer Awards Dinner,
The Columbia-Montour Council presented the

2018 Silver Beaver Award to:

Council Executive Board Member

Barry Lewis grew up in Benton, Pennsylvania.  He attended and graduated from Benton Area High School in 1978 and spent the next four years attending the Indiana University of Pennsylvania where he graduated in 1982 with a Bachelors of Art Degree in Criminology as well as minor degrees in both Computer Science and Political Science.  During his time at the university he was a distinguished military student in the Reserve Officers’ Training Corps.  He received his commission in the Unites States Army as a military intelligence officer.

In 1983, he attended and graduated from the Municipal Police Officers’ Training Course and became the Chief of Police of both Sugarloaf Township Police Department and the Benton Borough Police Department which were combined into the Benton Area Police Department in 1987.  During his tenure, he became a supervisor for the Columbia County Drug Task Force and was employed part-time by the Bloomsburg Police Department.

He resigned from the police departments in 1991 to attend law school at the University of Pittsburgh, School of Law, graduating in 1994.  He has since been practicing law in Columbia County and adjoining counties and is currently a partner in the law firm of Hummel, Lewis & Smith LLP in Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.

As a youth, our honoree was a member of Cub Scout Pack 51 and later moved on to Boy Scout Troop 51 in Benton.  He also completed his Ordeal to become a member of the Order of the Arrow, Wyona Lodge 18.

From 2008 until 2011 he served as the Cubmaster of Pack 20 in Lightstreet, Pennsylvania until he was chosen as the Columbia-Montour Council’s first Executive Vice-President in 2011.  He then served as the Council’s President from 2012 until 2014.  During his tenure as President his leadership was key to the revitalization of relationships between the units and council leadership.  In June of 2014, he took on the position of District Chairman of the Lenni-Lenape District. In January of 2017, he succeeded James Cleary as the Chairman of the Council Nominating Committee.

Our honoree is also a member of the Area 4 Committee where he is the Area Liaison to the Susquehanna Council and also the Chairman of the Area Strategic Planning Committee.  Barry was recently honored as one  of the 2017 Eagle Class Honorees.

He currently resides in Millville with his wife Maria and son Matthew, an Eagle Scout.
