Wyona Lodge Rocks NOAC!!

The past two days have been an exciting time for the Wyona Contingent to the Centennial National Order of the Arrow Conference.

Let’s get to the Big News first.  The Wyona Lodge Ceremony Team placed 4th best in the entire Nation!!!  We are so proud of our team.  It was a great moment to watch them in the Grand Parade, following the dancers into the Night of Champions, and sitting with the dancers in the pow wow circle. While we would have liked to make it back-to-back champions, we have served notice that 2012 was no fluke; Wyona Lodge has a tradition of excellence in its ceremonies.  A special thank you to Brandon and Aaron Mowery for the insight they provided to team members.  Thanks to all of the lodge members who helped to prepare the team.

While many enjoyed the individual dance competition finals at the Night of Champions, the rest of the contingent enjoyed the Grand Hodag. (Sort of a carnival on steroids.)  Carson Keller looks absolutely dashing in his balloon dog hat.

In other NOAC news, one of the special 100th Anniversary Events is the Legacy Project.  Each Lodge brought the following:  (1) A crate filled with wood to fuel the Centennial Fire, (2) the lid of that crate decorated with a symbol of the Lodge, (3) a Lodge history book, and (4) a rock from the council camp decorated with a symbol of the Lodge.   We were thrilled to see that our lodge rock was awarded recognition as an “Exemplar Rock”.  Wyona literally “Rocks” NOAC!!!

The Lodge rocks will be taken to the Summit, in West Virginia, and made into part of the permanent OA display there (likely to be either a wall or a fireplace).  A sobering note was the display of Lodge rocks for all of the Merged Lodges of the Order. There were more of these than Lodges that are active.  It served as a reminder that we need to continue the work to keep Columbia-Montour Council strong and able to continue to deliver a quality Scouting program to the youth of our area.

Tuesday’s Arena show featured an address from the President of the Boy Scouts of America, Dr. Robert Gates.  A former Director of the CIA, and the Secretary of Defense under both President Bush and President Obama, Dr. Gates emphasized that our nation needs the values of the BSA and the Order of the Arrow to not only survive, but thrive in the 21st century.

The show also featured a performance by “Maddie and Tae”.  It quickly became obvious that some of our contingent members are serious country music fans, and others are not. Nevertheless, the performance was high-energy and was entertaining for all.  After the show, Ed Dilg and Kent Robbins demonstrated great proficiency in cutting a path through the departing crowd.

Wednesday afternoon, Goody McCormick learned about making sure to get on the right bus.  Instead of the bus back to the dorms, he hopped the bus to the Scouting Centennial Gala Dinner in Downtown Lansing. After being informed that dinner tickets were $60 a pop, he kept his wits about him (and his wallet in his pocket), gave us a status call, and promptly caught the return bus to campus…where he then read his map wrong and took the long way around to get to our dorm.  This Philmont veteran scout travelled 11 miles over more than an hour, to save a 1 mile, 20 minute, absolutely flat terrain, walk.  Even Goody had a good laugh when we pointed out that his Ceremony character is Kichkinet, the “Guide” of the Lodge.  

The last two mornings have been filled with individual training sessions, with topics ranging from the history of the Ordeal Ceremony to beadwork techniques.  We are expecting that the knowledge and skills learned at NOAC 2015 will energize Wyona Lodge for the next several years.

Thursday saw more patch trading than the rest of the week. Tyler Dunn has developed a sharp eye for the good patch deal.  Paul Dennehy gets the award for persistence in the pursuit of one patch (with an assist from Chris Leighow).  Most people were trading patches for other patches, but Tyler Heintzelman traded for some…different items, including pink knee socks, a beaded sash, a lighted Medusa hat, a hand carved bolo tie, and a horse’s head. Yes, you heard that right; Tyler is obviously a horse trader. (Stop groaning, it is hard to do good jokes when writing at 2:00 am!)  Tyler’s mom is so looking forward to these treasures coming to her house on Saturday evening. 

Speaking of Saturday evening, if traffic is reasonable, the Wyona contingent should arrive at the Scout Office between 6:30 and 7:00 pm.

Joe West had his arm signed by Miss Michigan.  He doesn’t want to wash it off.  We mentioned the need for regular showers.  He mentioned the word “Tattoo”. We told him “Parental permission required” (and unlikely to be given!).

Well, an exciting Friday is coming: 15,000 Arrowmen helping the MSU Police run an evacuation drill of Spartan Stadium, the Centennial Festival, and the closing Arena show.  See you on Saturday!!

Columbia-Montour Boy Scouts--Centurion Award Recognition

Wyona Lodge Order of the Arrow, and the Columbia-Montour Council, BSA are pleased to announce that five leaders who served locally are being recognized by the National Council of the BSA as recipients of the Centurion Award. Recognition locally will be at a Campfire Program at Camp Lavigne, Benton, this Friday, July 10th, at 7:30 pm. It would be great if you could publish this story.  (I am providing a lot of stuff, but a newspaper editor once told me that you can never have too much content to do a story from).

The Order of the Arrow is the National Honor Society of the Boy Scouts of America.  Founded in 1915 by E. Urner Goodman and Carrol Edson at Treasure Island Camp, Philadelphia Council, the Order is dedicated to encouraging and recognizing the ideals of Brotherhood, Cheerfulness and Service in Scouts. The Order is based on the idea that “He who serves his fellows is, of all his fellows, greatest.”

In 1925, the Order came to Columbia-Montour Council, with the establishment of Wyona Lodge 18.

In 2015, the Order of the Arrow is enjoying a year long celebration of its 100th Anniversary.  Part of this celebration is the “Centurion Award”.  This award was created to recognize those Arrowmen who, in their service as a youth or as an adult, have demonstrated Servant Leadership, and a commitment to their fellow Scouts, throughout the history of the Order of the Arrow.

Five Centurions have been selected for Wyona Lodge. They are:  (1) Earl Blake, Berwick, (posthumous) the first Scout Executive of Columbia-Montour Council (serving from 1923-1953), the man who brought the Order of the Arrow to our Council, and one of the driving forces behind the acquisition and development of Camp Lavigne.  (2) Marlin Hummel, Mooresburg, a Scoutmaster and long-time Adviser and Leader in Wyona Lodge and the Council from the late 1950s to the present, and who has lead numerous projects at Camp Lavigne. (3) Dr. Mark Pyles, Berwick, Wyona Lodge Chief and a central Pennsylvania OA Section Chief in the 1970s, who continued his service as Council President, and who has a successful surgical practice. (4) Lucas Miller, Bloomsburg (posthumous), a Lodge and Section Chief, whose enthusiasm and dedication as both a youth and an adult from the 1980s onward made Scouting exciting for Scouts of all ages. And (5) Marcel Cinquina, Avoca, a decorated youth Scouting leader in the Adirondacks Region of New York, who has continued to inspire young men and women in his career as a Professional Scouter, including serving as Scout Executive of Columbia-Montour Council and Camp Director of Camp Lavigne during the past decade.

These Centurions will be honored at the Centennial National Order of the Arrow Conference at Michigan State University in August (43 members of Wyona Lodge will be attending). 

They are also being recognized locally at a Campfire Program at Camp Lavigne, Benton, this Friday evening, July 10th, at 7:30 pm.   The program will include both recognition and fun, and the Boys From Camp Lavigne hope you can join them.

The websites do not require technical skills and are easy to update all from your web browser. These websites will be FREE OF CHARGE to units and offer the following pages and functionality to units.
